From the Mind of Tyler Bereman
World's Most Insane Freeride Course
Building Tyler Bereman’s Red Bull Imagination 2.0 dream course was no easy task. And there was only one person, Jason Baker, the maestro of motocross tracks, who could do it again. In fact, Baker took 2020’s amazing freeride course build and actually expanded upon the groundwork for 2021. Taking this dream course from the ground floor to reality wasn’t easy, but Baker and his crew overcame every obstacle in their way. With jumps over three stories tall, three new sections of the course, and a grip of new riders to satisfy—Imagination 2021 was full of new action and new lines.

“One of the most unique features is the quarter pipe. Every time I see a guy go off that man, my stomach drops a little bit. The size and scale of this one are just, it's massive. We added a few more feet to it again this year. So at the landing, it’s almost thirty-eight feet tall. There are just jumps all over. There's a huge hundred forty-foot jump I know the guys are going to really go off on.”

Baker’s crew stood the test of time even though the harshest of weather conditions. “I've got an amazing crew with me. These guys are just relentless. I mean, it is the best way I can describe them,” Baker says proudly. And his wide array of equipment was just as impressive. “The equipment we have, I mean, gosh, it looks like a dealership out here!” Baker says with a laugh. “I have two large excavators, and then a little-bit-smaller excavator. That's what allows us to do [those] unique creative carving-type scenarios. I've got three dozers out here, three skid steers, a wheel loader, an off-road dump truck, and a big steel drum compactor. I mean, we have enough equipment out here to rival any road construction crew around here.”
This year, for the first time, the course-master used clay models to show his crew just what he wanted to be built using a small-scale model. “A lot of times it's just, you know, drawings on graph paper,” Baker explains. “I do use a google sketch app that helps out a lot, but you're still looking at either a piece of paper or a computer screen. [This year], I literally went to Michael's and grabbed a bunch of packages of modeling clay and I've been able to make 3D renderings of the new features and stuff like that. It's really helped the team out because they're able to see a much smaller scale and basically build the course out.”
Smaller-scale modeling allowed Jason and his crew to plan, map, and create the largest and the most visually pleasing freeride course ever created. For 2021, Red Bull Imagination fans are having a great time comparing the two iterations:“This year there are more obstacles, features, and jumps than these guys can do in five minutes. We’ve broken the course up into three different sections, the k-dub kingdom. That's like just a huge overgrown, dirt, skatepark. I've got the technical jib section with man-made elements like boxes and containers and stuff like that. And then we’ve got the big dog section. It's like three individual courses, all in one course, so that's what makes it really unique.”
While this monstrous course dwarfs most tracks that Baker has built, his real pride seems to come from the way his crew was able to act as a team to get this build accomplished: “I would say I'm most proud of the way the team came together, supported me, and made this happen.”

The 2.0 course build is Tyler’s version of a “dirt-skate-park.” Within the course are 3 different sections for pushing the riders to unleash full motorcycle creativity.

This isn’t a video game it’s real and it’s an ode to supercross legend Kevin Windham. Take it from Tom Parsons and think, “X-Fighters meets Glen Helen.”

So many options, so much potential, this is pure freeriding. Riding in the jib section contains a dump truck, hillside hip, fun box, and more.

This year the idea of a start and finish line segment has been scrapped, and the true free-ride mentality has been put into place. Baker explains that “Last year the approach was a freeride lap. I think where we kind of missed it a little bit was, all these guys are racers, by nature. As soon as you put a start and finish out there it became who could get done the quickest rather than who could go off and get super creative with this thing.” So, for 2021, fans should look to see the riders taking more unique lines and shying away from the idea of where they need to start and end their run. “The difference between last year's course, and this year is honestly pretty drastic.”
SCRAPING THE START-FINISH LINE
While a lot has changed for the second year of Red Bull Imagination, one thing remains the same: the relationship between Tyler Bereman and Baker. This relationship seems to be the yin and yang that free-riding needs. “I think the cool thing about being the designer—and also being an operator as well—I used to be a rider. To me you need that [experience] to be a good track builder,” said Baker. “You have to have that background to be able to understand when Tyler and I talk, we speak the same language...Ever since the first day he and I met, it was just like, we see the world the same way. I look at the world and I go, ‘Man, how much dirt could I get out of there? And what kind of jump could I build?’ And he sees it and goes, ‘Man, if you build that kind of jump, this is what I can do on it.’ We have mutual respect for each other. I think that's the biggest key is we're able to bounce ideas off each other.”
JASON & TYLER WORKING TOGETHER
For Imagination 2.0, Baker had everything he needed on-site to build his masterpiece. It has been almost an entire year since he had touched the original Imagination build. With a 12-acre canvas, Baker was able to actually get into the dirt, literally. He not only found the topsoil for the course but also the clay he needed to shape these new obstacles. The result? The largest free-ride course the world has seen.
Building Dreams in Kansas
When Tyler’s calling the dirt “chocolate cake," you know it’s dirt bike perfection.
“There’s about probably twelve inches of topsoil out here that’s all native,” explains Baker. “The topsoil does great for the filler and stuff like that. It does not cut the steep slopes all that well. We were able to get underneath that and we found some really, really good clay. There's some red clay down there and almost like a yellowish-white clay down deeper. And, man, this stuff just packs together.”
He continues, “Clay is definitely imperative to have a course. We didn't import anything off-site. There were just different areas. There were some areas that we ran into some rock pretty shallow, so we had to find other places that the clay depth went deeper before we hit, you know, something that was impermeable like a rock.”

Overall, a good crew, a few new graphing techniques, and some wild ideas are the recipe for a stellar Red Bull Imagination 2021 course. “Tyler and I did a site visit back here in May,” says Baker. “We just kind of sat up on the tower and just vibed on the course and what we wanted to change. Tyler kind of threw the keys at me this year… so I got to be a little bit creative too.”
